Chongming People has the glorious
revolutionary tradition. In the anti-Japanese combat in Ming Dynasty, Chongming
“Sha Warriors” was famous for their bravery. In autumn of 1921, peasants of
Xisha, Chongming rebelled. Mao Zedong wrote an article in the Guide Weekly of CPC Central Committee.
In September 1926, Lu Tieqiang and Yu Fucai, accredited persons of CPC Zhejiang
Provincial Party Committee, returned to Chongming and established the early
rural grass root Party organization. During the ling time of revolutionary
struggle, lots of Chongming people contributed their life for evolutionary cause
of Chinese People.
Currently Chongming County has 13 towns and 3 villages
under jurisdiction. Chengqiao Town, where the county government is located, is
the political, economic and cultural center of the county. After combination of
the three islands, population is increased in total, but the natural accrual has
a negative growth. By the end of 2006, domicile population in the county totaled
699,800, with a decrease of 1408 as against the previous year. Floating people
from other place amounted to 111,000. Birth rate of the population was 5.93‰.
Death rate was 8.33‰. Natural growth rate was -2.4‰.The nationality mix has Han
as the major, together with minorities of Mongolian, Hui, Man, Zhuang, Bai, Yi,
Chaoxian, Uygur, Buyi, Hani, Tujia and Tibetan.
